What Happened
Google has released an
emergency security patch for Chrome, fixing several
high-severity vulnerabilities that could allow attackers to
take control of your system simply by visiting a malicious website.
The update,
Chrome version 142, is now rolling out for
Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android. According to Google, the patch includes
five vulnerabilities — three rated
high severity and two
medium.
The most critical flaw,
CVE-2025-12725, affects Chrome’s
WebGPU component and can lead to
remote code execution (RCE) — giving hackers the ability to run commands or malware directly on your computer. Two other serious flaws impact Chrome’s
V8 JavaScript engine and
Views UI component.
Why It’s a Big Deal
Attackers are quick to exploit unpatched browsers. Because Chrome powers over
3 billion devices worldwide, even a small percentage of outdated browsers can expose a massive attack surface.
Once exploited, these vulnerabilities could let an attacker:
- Steal data or browser credentials
- Install malware remotely
- Hijack browser sessions
- Compromise systems connected to corporate networks
This isn’t just a routine update — it’s a
critical patch for your organization’s frontline defense against web-based threats.
How to Check and Update Chrome
For Desktop (Windows, macOS, Linux):
- Open Chrome
- Click the ⋮ menu (top right) → Help > About Google Chrome
- Chrome will automatically check and install updates
- Restart the browser
✅ You should see a version at or above
142.0.7444.134 (Windows/Linux) or
142.0.7444.135 (macOS)
For Android:
- Open Google Play Store → My apps & games → Update Chrome
✅ Version 142.0.7444.138 or newer
For Enterprise Users:
- Verify your Chrome Enterprise policies or MDM configuration aren’t blocking updates.
- Push the update across managed systems and confirm version compliance.
What You Can Do to Stay Secure
- Enable automatic updates across all devices.
- Audit other Chromium-based browsers (like Microsoft Edge or Brave) — these often share similar underlying components.
- Communicate update instructions to employees or clients immediately.
- Monitor for abnormal browser activity — pop-ups, crashes, or redirects could indicate attempted exploitation.
