Microsoft 365 Business Premium: The Security You're Already Paying For
Business Premium is one of the best security values available to a small business, and one of the most wasted. In most environments we inherit, the customer pays full price and uses email, Teams, and OneDrive. The security stack they bought sits there switched off.
What is actually in the box
Business Premium is Business Standard plus a real security and device management suite, for organizations up to 300 users. The pieces most often left idle:
- Defender for Office 365. Safe Links checks URLs at click time, Safe Attachments detonates files before delivery, and impersonation protection catches the fake-CEO and fake-vendor emails that ordinary spam filtering waves through. This is the difference between filtering junk and stopping targeted phishing.
- Defender for Business. Genuine endpoint detection and response for workstations and servers: behavioral detection, automated investigation and remediation, attack surface reduction rules, and web content filtering. If you still pay separately for consumer-grade antivirus, you are paying twice for less.
- Intune. Central device management. Enforce disk encryption, require a PIN, push settings and updates, separate work data on personal phones, and wipe a lost laptop remotely. It is also the foundation for the compliance policies Conditional Access checks.
- Entra ID P1 and Conditional Access. The crown jewel. Require MFA, block legacy authentication, restrict sign-ins by location or risk, and allow access to company data only from managed, compliant devices. Conditional Access is what turns "we have MFA" into an actual identity perimeter.
- Data loss prevention and sensitivity labels. Stop card numbers or Social Security numbers from leaving in email, and label documents so protection travels with the file instead of the folder it happens to sit in.
- Windows Autopilot. Ship a new laptop straight to an employee and have it configure itself to your standards at first sign-in. No imaging, no drive-by visit, no half-configured machines.
What turning it on actually prevents
The feature list matters less than the specific incidents it stops. Conditional Access plus device compliance blocks the attacker who successfully phished a password and an MFA code but is signing in from an unmanaged machine. Safe Links catches the invoice link that was clean at delivery and weaponized an hour later. Defender for Business isolates a machine automatically at 2 a.m. instead of letting ransomware spread until someone notices at 8. Intune lets you wipe the laptop left at a customer site instead of writing a breach notification.
None of that happens by default. The license gives you the capability; configuration gives you the protection.
The upgrade math
Businesses on Business Standard usually buy security piecemeal — an email security add-on, an antivirus subscription, a device management tool, maybe a password manager. Stacked up, that generally costs more than the difference between Standard and Premium, and leaves you with four vendors, four portals, and four support paths that never share signal with each other. Consolidating onto Business Premium tends to reduce both spend and complexity, and everything reports into one place.
Two honest caveats. Business Premium caps at 300 seats, so growing companies eventually look at enterprise licensing. And the license is not a finished product: an unconfigured Premium tenant is no safer than a Standard one. The configuration is where the actual work lives.
Where to start
- Enforce MFA on every account, administrators first, and disable legacy authentication protocols.
- Turn on Defender for Office 365 policies — Safe Links, Safe Attachments, and anti-phishing with your executives listed as protected users.
- Onboard endpoints to Defender for Business and confirm they are actually reporting in.
- Enroll devices in Intune with a baseline compliance policy: encryption, screen lock, current patches.
- Add Conditional Access requiring a compliant device for access to company data.
- Review Secure Score in your admin center monthly and work the list.
