How attacks actually start

Almost every ransomware incident begins in one of a few unglamorous ways:

  • Phishing. Someone clicks a convincing email, enters their password on a fake login page, or opens a malicious attachment. Still the number-one entry point, and the emails are more polished than ever.
  • Stolen credentials and infostealers. Attackers buy working logins on criminal markets, often harvested by "infostealer" malware from a personal device. If those credentials have no multi-factor authentication, they are a front-door key.
  • Exposed remote access. Remote Desktop (RDP) or a management port left open to the internet is a magnet. Automated tools scan for these around the clock and hammer them with stolen or guessed passwords.
  • Unpatched systems. A known vulnerability in a firewall, VPN appliance, or server that never got its update gives attackers a reliable way in.

  5. Immutable, offsite backups. Keep backups that attackers cannot alter or delete — immutable copies stored offsite or offline. This is your recovery insurance when everything else fails.
  6. An incident response plan. Know in advance who to call, how to isolate systems, and how to restore. The worst time to write the plan is at 2 a.m. during the attack.
